Kiosks & Displays

Most people think of computers, personal organisers or mobile phones when talking about accessing interactive displays. However an increasing part of our work involves creating interactive kiosk applications.

These are usually standard units containing a web server and a touch screen display. The user can then select services or options from the display and results can be shown using similar technology to websites. The systems can also be connected to the internet for an extra degree of interaction.

These systems are idea for shops, public sector waiting rooms or anywhere that deals with a large number of visiting members of the public. We work with various manufactures of these devices who supply everything from fully weather proof outdoor models to small counter-top models.

When designing these applications there are various considerations to bear in mind. If a touch screen display is used then items such as choices on the screen should be large enough for finger tips to easily select as these will generally be less precise than using a normal mouse cursor. In addition as keyboards are normally not available on these machines if detailed user input is required then features such as a “virtual” keyboard should be built into the application.
