CMS

Content Management Systems are used for managing websites and web content and normally allow the manipulation of content on a website via a simple user interface. Usually the software provides tools where users with little or no knowledge of programming languages and markup languages (such as HTML) can create and manage content with relative ease of use.

This would be in contrast to a traditional “static” site whereby any changes to a site’s content would need to be carried out by trained programmers, perhaps for a fee.

Most systems use a database to hold content, and a presentation layer displays the content to regular website visitors based on a set of templates. Ad-hoc solutions to meet exact needs can often be created by bespoke development teams.
