Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. Using an enhancement in JavaScript that allows Web pages to be more interactive and behave like local applications which are also known as "rich client" applications. AJAX allows the Web page to retrieve small amounts of data from the server without reloading the entire page increasing the web page's interactivity, speed, and usability.
A current buzzword amongst the web development community the same principles have been around for years in different forms (e.g. Iframes) and indeed we have often used such ad-hoc techniques. However this is a concerted effort to form a standard to create more interactive data driven applications for users. It also forms one of the tenets of the ambiguous “Web 2.0” philosophy.
