PHP is an extremely popular free, open source, cross-platform alternative to other server side technologies which uses a development methodology similar to both ASP and JSP.
Though it does not have the commercial backing of a large corporation, such as Sun or Microsoft, PHP (now in version 4 and 5 being developed) is widely available and extremely popular due to its ease-of-use and includes many standard features (for example, graphic manipulation) built in considered optional extras on other more expensive systems.
We have developed various PHP systems in the past where the cost of using, say, a Microsoft platform would have been prohibitive in relation to the project size.
